ANDREW MAGEE

Andrew Magee is a Visual Artist, Designer and Arts Facilitator based in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Andrew has managed operations at Hot Bed Press, a renowned printmaking studio and centre for Printmaking excellence, for 9 years and has extensive experience working in printmaking, education, curation, marketing and promotion, organising various arts outreach programs and has curated a number of exhibitions and shows.

Andrew’s practice incorporates a number of techniques including painting, printmaking, performance, video production, street art and animation.

His work primarily feeds from British Folk art and occult and esoteric printmaking. His recent screen prints reference the darkly surreal collages of Max Ernst alongside the simple beauty of the English profilist John Miers. Seen from a distance the silhouettes are dominant, yet as the viewer nears the work, the interior details take over, leading the eye into an enchanted space. An invitation is often found there; through a lit window, an open door, or a hand carelessly reaching into a roaring fire. These details act as a port of entry for the viewers’ imagination to take over. His work examines the relationships between light and dark, revealing and hiding areas through successive layers of ink to highlight or obscure elements. He has developed glazing techniques to fully explore the possibilities of depth in printmaking and painting.

Andrew graduated with a Degree in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University and has worked as Operations Manager at Hot Bed Press Printmaking Studio since 2006. He has been shortlisted twice for the prestigious John Moores Painting prize and was recently commissioned by Cornerhouse and Paul Hamlyn Foundation to produce a performance, audio and video piece titled 'Voice of The Garland Queen' which premiered at Sounds From The Other City. The piece is a long term project that encompasses film production, printmaking and a series of planned performances. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work is in many public and private collections.
